Anastasia Touati is a Civil Engineer, Research Officer in the CETE Ile de France, (MEDDM / DRIEA), Technical Study Centre for the Scientific and Technical Network of the French Ministry of Ecology, Energy, Sustainable Development and Transports.
She carries a PhD in the Research Project BIMBY (Build in My Backyard), funded by the French National Agency of Research, on the  diversification and intensification of suburban districts, project headed by the CETE Ile de France. She is supervised by Olivier Coutard and Jonathan Rutherford.

Urban intensification policies and processes in the suburbs
(Paris City Region/ Toronto City Region)

The PhD research focuses on the specific difficulties of implementing urban densification policies in individual low-rise housing areas, which are difficulties that occur with an unusual intensity in the suburbs. The research deals with urban densification processes and the policies that regulate them in the suburbs of the Paris-City Region (France), and in the Toronto Region (Greater Golden HorseShoe, Ontario, Canada). The study concentrates on residential areas which are mainly composed by detached houses to analyze the underlying economic and socio-political mechanisms (land, political and regulatory issues, social and demographic composition of the neighborhoods, etc.) of the densification policies and processes, in a multi-level policy context promoting densification (State, Region or Province). It also focuses on the shifting influence of the policy instruments used to regulate the densification dynamics, by studying the influence of the governance structure of the two metropolis (the Paris Region and the Toronto Region) on the implementation of the densification policies.
